Crown thinning involves removing inner branches in the crown region of a tree, allowing light to pass through naturally without altering the overall shape of the tree.
The size of the canopy is reduced overall by removing branches evenly throughout the crown. This process also removes dangerous deadwood and crossing branches, reducing the chances of infection.
Crown lifting is the removal of selected branches and limbs from the lower part of the trees crown thus lifting the crowns overall height. Depending on the location of the tree, this process is generally performed to ensure vehicles and people can pass safely underneath avoiding accidents and injury.
Pollarding is a woodland management method but has in recent years found its way into the practice of Arboriculture. The process involves the removal of all branches and most limbs, resulting in the main stem remaining and occasionally a framework of the major limbs (Scaffold Pollarding). After a tree has been pollarded the tree is given some time to re-grow, after which the process is usually repeated.
Removing a large tree in a restricted are requires the tree to be cut down in sections. When space allows, a tree can be felled in the traditional way, whereby precise cuts are made to control the direction of the fell.
Hazard assessment of tree(s) is based on their overall condition from a structural, physiological and health viewpoint and is a defined visual system carried out by professional and competent Arboriculturalists. The usual factors that indicate a tree may be hazardous are overall decline, root heave, die-backs of branches and the presence of fungal, bacterial and insect diseases.

Veteran trees are of special interest biologically, culturally or aesthetically due to their age, size or condition and have mostly lived beyond the normal life expectancy for the species concerned. The management of such trees requires a sensitive approach focusing on protection and preservation.
Sometimes it is necessary to remove certain branches of a trees crown, without fully reducing, thinning or lifting the crown. An example would be if a large branch or number of branches had extended over a neighbouring boundary or are very close to a building. This process involves removing as little live growth as possible to ensure the health and stability of the tree and achieve the desired clearance necessary.
Strategically pruning fruit trees not only controls the size and shape of the tree, but also stimulates the growth of flower and fruit buds. This should be done early in the season or during colder months when the tree is dormant.
When a tree falls down it is usually due to the trees age or health, or the result of bad weather, or a combination of all three.
